Chapter Summary Bible Study #1 of 1,189: Matthew 1

Date: November 27, 2015 to November 29, 2015.

1 Caption: The family tree and birth of Jesus Christ.

2 Contents: The genealogy of Jesus Christ proving He is the Messiah and fulfillment of Scripture.

Verses 1-17 are His family tree and ancestors.

Verse 16 shares how Jesus is the Messiah.

Verses 18-25 The circumstances that surrounded the birth of Jesus.

Verse 21 tells us how Jesus was born to save us from our sins.

Verse 22 says that everything took place in order to fulfill the prophet.

Verse 23 God is with us.

Verse 24 mentions how when Joseph woke, he did everything the Lord commanded.
It is also interesting to note the divisions of the family tree, which verse 17 shares:

Matthew 1:17 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
Division 1: So all the generations from Abraham to David were 14 generations;
Division 2: and from David until the exile to Babylon, 14 generations;
Division 3: and from the exile to Babylon until the Messiah, 14 generations.

3 Chief people: Jesus was the main individual of all of Matthew 1. See verses 1-17. There are greats in the faith and those who were clearly sinners and some who were nobodies in His lineage. It was quite the melting pot. Abraham and David were both emphasized. Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, took center stage in the last part of Matthew 1. Also an angel who spoke to Joseph in a dream.

4 Choice verse: Matthew 1:23 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
23 See, the virgin will become pregnant
and give birth to a son,
and they will name Him Immanuel,
which is translated “God is with us.”

5 Crucial words: Fathered, generations, birth, Messiah, engaged, divorce, angel, pregnant virgin, Immanuel, commanded, Jesus.

6 Challenges: Wanting to spend time in study with each name in His family tree.

7 Cross-references: See this link for all of them:

The truth is, I could spend days on this chapter alone with cross-references. There are so many.

Isaiah 9:6-7 New King James Version (NKJV)
6 For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Genesis 28:13-14 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)
13 The Lord was standing above it, saying, “I am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give the land on which you are lying to you and your descendants. 14 Your descendants will be like the dust on the earth. You will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. Through you and through your descendant every family on earth will be blessed.

James 2:21-26 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
21 Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 You see that faith was active together with his works, and by works, faith was perfected. 23 So the Scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness, and he was called God’s friend. 24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And in the same way, wasn’t Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by a different route? 26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

8 Christ seen: Every verse in Matthew 1. This entire chapter is about Jesus Christ.
9 Central lesson: He is with us. Now and forever more. (It's hard to apply that concretely, other than to try to remember it often.)

Do what God says, when and how He says it.

10 Conclusion: Jesus was the Messiah and several prophecies were fulfilled by him, including with His family tree. It is because of Him, and my belief in Him, my sins are forgiven. Also, He is always with us.
